Formative research and solution generation

Early stage formative research is my favorite part of the job: it involves taking an idea from a back of the napkin hypothesis to a solution concept, with an open mind and strong mixed-methodology to collect the data through interviews, focus groups, observations, surveys, literature reviews and competitive analysis.

I enjoy the sense-making stage of the design thinking process: sitting in the mess of data and making sense of the information collected, turning it into empathy-driven insights and solutions using various data analysis methods and tools such as thematic analysis, journey maps, empathy maps, user segments and archetypes.

Examples of early-stage projects I’ve been involved in include:

Usability

USABILITy, Usefulness and acceptability TESTING

I have also worked on existing products, validating their usability and usefulness with end users, and informing improvements and ideas for future versions.

My role on these projects involves understanding the current state and related roles and workflows, creating the project protocol and methodology, designing interview guides and surveys, conducting user feedback sessions, analyzing the data collected and generating user-driven insights about the current and future states of the product.

Examples include:

design thinking workshops

At Partners Connected Health, our team adapted the Stanford d.school and IDEO design thinking methodology to best fit project needs: one key change was the addition of an initial ‘Align’ phase. During the Align phase, internal project staff and clients were able to discuss personal and organizational goals from the project, and together align on collaboration models and metrics of project success.

I have planned and facilitated design thinking workshops at various stages of a project, including project initiation, data synthesis and solution ideation.

Additionally I have helped plan and facilitate workshops and immersions for programs to drive user empathy and innovation such as:

A design thinking and user-facing perspective requires a creative lens. I have channeled my professional creative instincts into:
